What to Look for in a Business IT Partner

Most small businesses don't think much about their IT setup until something goes wrong. By then, they're in a hurry and often end up with whoever they can get rather than whoever is right for their situation.

What Matters When Choosing an IT Partner

They take time to understand your business. Good IT support is contextual. A provider who asks about your workflows, your dependencies, your growth plans, and your risk tolerance is building a picture of what you actually need. One who leads with a price sheet before understanding your situation is selling a package.

Response time commitments are in writing. 'We respond quickly' is not a commitment. Ask for defined SLAs: what is the maximum response time for a critical outage? For a non-urgent issue? What does 'response' mean — acknowledgment, or active work?

They own the problem. The best IT partners take ownership of issues end-to-end. If the problem is with your ISP, they're on the phone with the ISP. If it's a vendor issue, they're following up. They don't close tickets by pointing fingers elsewhere.

They communicate in plain language. You should understand what you're paying for and why. If you're regularly confused or feel like you're being spoken down to, that's a problem — both for the relationship and for your ability to make good decisions about your own technology.

Red Flags

Be cautious of: lock-in contracts with steep exit penalties; providers who resist giving you admin access to your own systems; vague pricing with lots of 'may incur additional charges'; and anyone who can't explain what they monitor or how they know when something is wrong.
