Structured Cabling 101: Why Your Cable Infrastructure Matters

Network problems are often blamed on equipment — the router, the switch, the ISP. But a surprising number of persistent, hard-to-diagnose issues trace back to the cabling behind the walls. Bad runs, wrong categories, improper terminations, and disorganized patch panels cause intermittent failures, speed caps, and maintenance nightmares.

What Structured Cabling Actually Means

Structured cabling is a standardized approach to building a cable infrastructure: consistent cable type and grade, proper routing and bend radius, correct termination at patch panels and wall plates, and full documentation of every run. When done correctly, the cable plant is invisible — it just works, and it works for 15–20 years.

Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6A?

Cat5e supports Gigabit Ethernet and was the standard for years. It's acceptable for low-density environments but reaching end of useful life for new installations.

Cat6 is the current baseline for commercial installations. It supports 10 Gigabit up to 55 meters and has better noise rejection than Cat5e. Use this for most projects.

Cat6A supports 10 Gigabit up to 100 meters and is the right choice for runs to wireless access points or anywhere future 10G switching is planned.

Why It Pays to Do It Right

Structured cabling is the one part of a network that's difficult to change after the fact. Walls close, ceilings go up, and running new cable gets expensive. A proper installation done once — with documentation — saves significant cost and frustration over the life of the building.
